Because my graduate experience has been far from the “cookie cutter” CSP path, I have had the privilege of considering how I preserve a sense of self while maintaining high quality work.  Throughout these opportunities, I have determined there are multiple elements that factor into maintaining personal foundations to lead a healthy and happy life while pursuing my career.

For me, finding functional area fit was an important part of maintaining balance for me.  Throughout my experience, I have learned I need to work in an active environment that works to promote health and wellness as a lifestyle.  Additionally, I have found that working with student-athletes provides an opportunity for me to engage in conversations I enjoy while helping students who have a very unique relationship with their institution.  I believe it is important to support my student-athletes while they do what they love, their sport.  Student-athletes are more likely to understand that my goal is to support them in all aspects of their lives when they see me supporting them in their academics, athletics, and other appropriate aspects of their lives.  The beauty of this belief, however, is that attending athletic events is an opportunity I fully enjoy and often a stress relief for me.

Outside of my professional life, I have learned that an important part of maintaining personal foundations is to stay active.  It is imperative I find time to engage in activities I enjoy, including golf, volleyball, and running.  By setting aside time to participate in these activities, I am able to relieve stress, stay fit, and am more likely to be happy overall.
